What sample is required?

The determination is made from a venous blood sample.

Is some kind of prior preparation necessary?

For this test you do not need any special preparation.

Why do the analysis?

To evaluate inappropriate blood clot formation (thrombotic event or thromboembolism); to determine if you may have protein C or protein S deficiency. To evaluate the cause of a thrombotic event (formation of a blood clot); to evaluate the cause of a prolonged partial thromboplastin time (PTT); to try to find out the cause of recurrent miscarriages or as part of the evaluation of an antiphospholipid syndrome. This test is not used to diagnose the autoimmune disorder known as systemic lupus erythematosus, also known simply as lupus.

When to do the analysis?

When signs and symptoms of blood clot formation in a vein or artery (thrombosis or thromboembolism) have occurred; when the TTP is prolonged; when repeated miscarriages have occurred.
