What sample is required?
In women, sample of blood, urine, or cells or secretions from the infected area obtained by scraping or swabbing; in both sexes, a urine sample; sometimes a sample of cells or secretions from an apparently infected nongenital area.
Is some kind of prior preparation necessary?
For this test you do not need any special preparation.
Why do the analysis?
To diagnose an infection by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite, which causes the sexually transmitted disease known as trichomoniasis.
When to do the analysis?
For screening purposes – testing may be recommended if you are sexually active, pregnant or considering pregnancy, or at increased risk of contracting this sexually transmitted disease (STD). For diagnostic purposes – when symptoms of this STD occur, such as painful urination or bowel pain, anal secretions, itching, pain or bleeding; in women, increased vaginal discharge or vaginal bleeding between periods; in men discharge from the penis and pain, or swelling of the testicles; in newborns when there is conjunctivitis.
