What sample is required?

The determination is made from a venous blood sample from the arm.

Is some kind of prior preparation necessary?

It is generally necessary to fast for 8 hours before sample extraction; occasionally the test may be requested in other circumstances, such as when performing an oral glucose tolerance test.

Why do the analysis?

To assess insulin production by pancreatic beta cells, to diagnose pancreatic islet cell insulinoma, to establish the cause of hypoglycemia (low blood glucose), to identify insulin resistance, or to determine when a person with type 2 diabetes needs to supplement oral insulin therapy.

When to do the analysis?

If you have hypoglycemia with symptoms or signs such as sweating, palpitations, dizziness or fainting, to monitor the ability to produce insulin in a diabetic person and to assess for insulin resistance.
