What sample is required?

The determination is made from a urine sample collected first thing in the morning or from a venous blood sample.

Is some kind of prior preparation necessary?

For this test you do not need any special preparation. However, it is advisable not to drink large amounts of water before collecting urine for a pregnancy test as a false negative result could be obtained due to too dilute urine.

Why do the analysis?

To confirm a pregnancy; to identify an ectopic pregnancy; to monitor a pregnancy in which there is a risk of abortion; occasionally, before administering any treatment, to make sure that the woman is not pregnant; as part of a set of tests to detect fetal abnormalities (see Screening in the first trimester of pregnancy and Screening in the second trimester of pregnancy).

When to do the analysis?

When a woman suspects that she may be pregnant; the test can be performed reliably after a 7-day delay in menstruation, and some methods can detect hCG even earlier; when there are signs and symptoms suggestive of an ectopic pregnancy, or when there is a risk of miscarriage or that the pregnancy does not come to fruition; also before certain treatments.
