PSA

Also known:

Total PSA, Free PSA, Bound PSA

systematic name:

Prostate Specific Antigen

19,000

What sample is required?

The determination is made from a venous blood sample.

Is some kind of prior preparation necessary?

For this test you do not need any special preparation.

Why do the analysis?

To detect prostate cancer in men (although there is no consensus about its usefulness in asymptomatic men), as an aid in the decision to perform a prostate biopsy or not, to monitor the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatment and for the detection of recurrence of prostate cancer.

When to do the analysis?

The PSA should be ordered when a man has symptoms that suggest the presence of prostate cancer, such as difficulty or pain when urinating and/or the need to urinate frequently. It could also be requested at regular intervals, during and after prostate cancer treatment. It is recommended to do it at least once a year from the age of 40.
